A Book and a Chat with Veronica Faye

Following the recent list of thriller, mystery writers who have appeared on “A Book and a Chat” comes today’s guest Veronica Faye.

An avid fan of Agatha Christie’s British tea-cozy mysteries and the hard-boiled novels about detective Easy Rawlins by Walter Mosley since she was a teenager, Veronica recently published "My Past Came Knocking: The Savannah Wooten Case" the first in the Gemini Jones series which I’m sure will become a must set of novels for those who love mystery thrillers.

Veronica started writing the book in 2006 when she was going through her own trials and tribulations undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer.

About Gemini Jones - My Past Came Knocking: The Savannah Wooten Case: (taken from PRNews)

Veronica Faye pens a murder mystery that follows two women who find the strength to overcome their painful past. The novel’s lead character, Gemini Jones, is a successful African-American attorney who manages a high-profile career while keeping her bipolar disorder in check. Her newest case revolves around the murder of David Ban, a politician widely beloved in the city’s black community.

The client who brings the case to her is a woman she knows all too well: Savannah Wooten. Both women share a painful past together; Gemini and Savannah were able to overcome their traumatizing ordeals to arrive as successful, accomplished women. Yet the murder of Ban, the politician, will force them to relive the past and deal with secrets they long considered lost to time. To proceed with the legal case, both women will have to reveal painful secrets and uncover the real David Ban that the public never knew.

Full of sharp-witted humor and heart-breaking tragedy, “Gemini Jones” is an engrossing read. In the personality of power lawyer Gemini, author Faye has crafted a character that will be a role model for African-American women and an inspiration to anyone who has ever had to manage bipolar disorder while holding down a professional career. A story of pain, tragedy, endurance and success, the novel sends a powerful message of hope as told through the compelling story of two strong black women.

“Gemini Jones: ‘My Past Came Knocking’ – The Savannah Wooten Case” is a mystery that will lure readers with its message of overcoming adversity, its witty, tough characters and a plot that will get readers quickly turning pages.

With the second in the series already underway, Veronica explained that she wants wants Gemini to be a role model for African-American women as well as an inspiration to those who manage bipolar disorder while holding down a professional career.

A Book and a Chat with Peter Leonard

Becoming an author whose works are heading for the top shelf of thriller writing is a hard job, even harder when your father is a famous author.

My guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat” Peter Leonard, is the son of Elmore Leonard  who is perhaps best-known for works such as "Get Shorty", "Out of Sight", "Hombre", "Mr Majestyk" and "3:10 to Yuma".

As we learned during the show, it took Peter’s father 25 years to become an overnight success,  and almost as long for Peter himself to get around to writing.

The wait however was well waiting for as hit after hit has flowed from Peter Leonard’s creative juices. His thrillers have earned him wide critical acclaim for their tight plotting and story lines.

Titles such as "Quiver", "Trust Me", "Voices of the Dead", "All He Saw Was the Girl" ,"Back From the Dead", and his latest novel "Eyes Closed Tight”, have put the name Peter Leonard as one of the most thrilling suspense novelists of our time.

About “Eyes Closed Tight”:

O'Clair is a former Detroit homicide investigator who now owns a motel in Pompano Beach, Florida in his retirement. He runs the place with his much younger girlfriend, Virginia, who's a knockout and can fix anything. One morning, he’s cleaning up after the previous night’s partiers when he sees a lovely young woman stretched out asleep on a lounge chair. He shakes her gently. Then he touches her neck and feels for a pulse. There isn't one. Her skin is cold, body starting to stiffen, definitely in the early stages of rigor.

When a second girl is murdered, O'Clair knows someone is trying to send him a message. The way the girls are killed reminds O'Clair of a case he investigated years earlier. Now convinced the Pompano murders are related, O'Clair returns to Detroit Police Homicide to review the murder file and try to figure out what he might have missed.

And when Virginia is kidnapped by the killer, the stakes grow exponentially higher.

A Book and a Chat with Dr Mark Rubinstein

Fellow Connecticut author Dr Mark Rubinstein is the guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”.

From his background of medicine and psychiatry which includes several non-fiction books, Mark wrote his first debut fiction novel in the form of the wonderful suspenseful and riveting, “Mad Dog House” which he shared with us on his last visit. This book went on to be a “Finalist for the 2012 ForeWord Reviews Book of the Year Award”  (Thriller & Suspense), as well as receiving werll over a 150 glowing reviews on Amazon, and I might add one of the favorite books in my own household. This was followed with the  tense, moving, and wondrously bone-chilling novel. novel "Love Gone Bad".

Now Mark has another hit on his hands in the form of his novella "The Foot Soldier".

About "The Foot Soldier"

Right after college graduation, Costa, a lower-middle-class kid from Buffalo, New York, is drafted into the US army and plunged into the Vietnam War. The Foot Solder catapults the reader back to the conflict that changed America.
This is a compelling novella of morality—right or wrong in a split second in the hell of the jungle—when it really matters, regardless of rank, military orders, or rule books. It asks how a soldier survives, how he deals with dislocation, and how he reacts when given an order that defies everything he’s ever believed about the human soul.

One reviewer wrote...

"I'm so grateful I was urged to read The Foot Soldier, despite its subject matter being
something I normally would have avoided. Many women are like me: we avoid war
stories. In this case, that would be a huge mistake. You will not be able to put this story
down--or forget it. The Foot Soldier is a must-read for everyone."

Other news Mark shared is that while "Mad Dog House was originally planned standalone novel so many people have been wanting more of the characters he is bringing out a follow up in the form of “Mad Dog Justice" later this year.

A Book and a Chat with Vangie Williams

Vangie Williams is my guest on today’s “A Book and a Chat”, she is an author, writer, professional genealogist, radio show host, historian, speaker, project manager, real estate agent and advocate for mental health care and rights.  As well as mother of six girls, so it is in a way surprising that Vangie managed to find time to appear on the show. However like her life she managed to fill the whole show with interesting and entertaining discussion.

Not satisfied with writing one book in the series Vangie already has others either part written or being planned, in fact the Broken Life Journals is a ten book series and along the way Vangie has written a Paranormal Romance novel called "Whisper".

The Broken Life Journals are the story of love cursed in Old Africa.

A young African maiden falls in love with a Frenchman captured by her father’s warriors.  As she watches and cares for him over the next twenty-one days, she is captivated by his beautiful green eyes and his genuine smile and breaks tribal law when she asks her father to be his bride instead of her chosen husband.  Her father King Sundiata could not refuse his youngest daughter and allows her to leave Africa with the Frenchman; what she doesn’t know is that the tribal shaman has placed a curse on her and all of her female descendants.

21 suns you feel in love and left your people, 21 moons shall you love your girl child.

Fast forward to 2002 and young Bethel began having vivid dreams of African and French women who speak to her and show her the paths of their lives.  For the next 10 years of her life, she listens, learns and writes the story of each of her matriatic ancestors.

Broken Life – A Fight for Forever – Book 1 is about Marguerite, the third women in her dreams and the woman who writes the first entry in the journal that her deceased mother left her.  Her dreams are so vivid that she is a shadow watching the past in the future.  As Marguerite reveals the past through visions of her travels from New York through the volatile south back to France, the rigorous fight to break the curse’s menacing grip steadily climaxes as young Bethel gains wisdom through her visions as well as the truths spoken from her father’s reluctant tongue and through the cherished wooden box, a treasured but mysterious heirloom, which connects Bethel to both the curse and a counter to the same. Upon possessing the box, she discovers the nearly elusive path to victory through the journals marked by each of the women of her bloodline. Through a series of visions, which first take her to the mid 1800’s, she sees the way…to the fight for forever.

Other planned title include:

·    A Fight for Forever- Marguerite Ahok (Worthy of Love) Chevalier, the years 1844 – 1845
·    A Memory Not Forgotten – Magdalene Taurean (Strong as a Bull) Burnett, the years 1862 – 1864
·    Moving Forward – Sarah Tandis, the years 1885 – 1886
·    A Loss for Words – Ines Kendis (Pure), the years 1903 – 1904
·    Home to France – Lena Niesha (Pure), the years 1918 – 1919
·    A World in Turmoil – Alicia Yetty (Ruler of the household), the years 1937 – 1938
·    New Freedom – Zoe Gaynell (Happy or Shiney), the years 1953 – 1954
·    A Soldier’s Battle – Clara Ananda (Worthy of Love), the years 1972 – 1973
·    Peaceful Endings – Bethel Temima (It is Heard), the years 1992 – 1993
·    A Friend Found – Sidone Kesia (It is Heard-Earth Bound), the years 2012-2013

A Book and a Chat with Shannon Delany

Shannon Delany first appeared on “A Book and a Chat” back in 2010 as one of the debut authors from Class of 2K10. Since that time she has become one o f the most popular and followed names in YA. This being the case,  it was great to have her as my first guest as I started a new set of shows on New Vision Radio, all be it after a few early teething issues with the new radio setup.

After growing up writing various articles as a freelance journalist, Shannon wrote a serialized version of "13 to Life" at Textnovel.com and won the first-ever cell phone novel contest in the western world.

This opened the flood gates to her writing future, and agent then a film request and finally a publishing house followed one after the other taking Shannon somewhat by surprise.

The success of “13 to Life” was just the beginning, four more books in the series followed with equal success and an ever expanding audience. Secrets and Shadows, Bargains and Betrayals, Destiny and Deception, and Rivals and Retribution brought the series to a wonderful 5 novel selection.

Now Shannon is showing a slightly darker but still brilliantly written side in her new Weather Witch series.

About the Weather witch series:

Some fled the Old World to avoid war, and some fled to leave behind magic. Yet even the fiercely regulated New World--with its ranks and emphasis on decorum--cannot staunch the power that wells up in certain people, influencing the weather and calling down storms. Hunted, the Weather Witches are forced to power the rest of the population's ships, as well as their every necessity, and luxury, in a time when steampower is repressed.

Jordan Astraea hails from a flawless background with no taint of magick, but on her seventeenth birthday she is accused of summoning an unscheduled storm. Taken from her family, Jordan is destined to be enslaved on an airship. But breaking Jordan may prove to be the very thing her carefully constructed society cannot weather.

And losing Jordan forever may force her beau, Rowen, to be the hero he would have never otherwise dared become.

"Weather Witch" was released last year with book two “Stormbringer” following up at the beginning of this year. Book three in the series "Thunderstruck" is sdue to be released on  May 20.

The show shared just how far this multi talented lady has come in the few years since her first release and proved that she was just the guest to have for the first show on this new radio station.

A Book and a Chat with Gayle Rosengren

I am pleased to have another of the Class of 2K14 debut YA authors in the form of the talented Gayle Rosengren as my guest on today’s on “A Book and a Chat”.

After developing her writing skills while being copy-editor at American Girl and having written stories for children in Cricket, Ladybug, Jack and Jill and Children's Digest magazines. Along with knowledge gained while working as a children's and young adult librarian at a public library, Gayle has finaly published her debut novel.

Gayle’s debut novel “What The Moon Said” was inspired by events in her mother's childhood. From these memories the seeds grew into a fictional story around the character Gayle imagined her mother to be as a child.

About “What The Moon Said”:  (taken from authors web page)

What the Moon Said is the story of 10 year-old Esther and her family and how their love makes good times better and bad times bearable during the Great Depression.

Their move from the big city of Chicago to a small ramshackle farm in Wisconsin is full of changes for Esther.  Some of them are good, like being able to have a dog at last.  But some of them are bad, like having to use an outhouse because there is no indoor plumbing!

Join Esther on her "great adventure" and find out if she ever earns the hug she yearns for from her mother.   Find out what Esther discovers about luck—good and bad—and about the superstitions so important to her mother.  Find out what the moon said.

Though said to be a YA book, I can this wonderful story of childhood and hope is said to be for the YA audience I can see it being read and enjoyed by those of all ages, and with a second novel already planned to be released in 2105, the name Gayle Rosengrem is one to look out for…. The signs are there.

A Book and a Chat with Joanne DiMaggio

Today’s guest Joanne DiMaggio was due to appear a few months back but due to unforeseen issues the show did not quite happen, so I was really looking forward to chatting.  Despite some connection problems at the start today’s show we managed not only to get through the show but learn much about this interesting author and her work.

When she was around nine, Joanne prayed to be shown some sort of code she could write things in that her parents would not understand. It was not until many years later that she found out the characters that had come to her to form this code were in fact those of a long gone language thousands of years old.

For more than 25 years, Joanne DiMaggio has been a student of esoteric studies. A professional writer and author of three books and hundreds of magazine articles for a mainstream audience, she also developed her ability to write in an altered state of consciousness.
She eventually combined her passions for guided writing and past life work and created a groundbreaking method for obtaining past life information through a written form of meditation she calls "Soul Writing."

Joanne’s first book, "Soul Writing: Conversing with Your Higher Self"  is based on the research she did for her thesis at Atlantic University. Now in her newest book, "Your Soul Remembers: Accessing Your Past Lives Through Soul Writing" she explores the use of soul writing to acquire past life information.

About Your Soul Remembers: Accessing Your Past Lives Through Soul Writing (Taken from Amazon)

When faced with life s big questions, we often find ourselves wishing for a guidebook, a manual to help us through the important decisions. But as Joanne DiMaggio so clearly points out, we do have access to all the answers we need. The process of connecting to the sacred wisdom within us that part of us that has our answers is always available through a technique called inspirational writing, or soul writing. Joanne DiMaggio is an inspired teacher, drawing upon her own experiences and her knowledge of the Edgar Cayce readings to inform and support the quest for self-discovery. With clear instructions on the soul writing process, examples of others experiences, and information on how to expand this process into other areas of your life, Soul Writing is the ultimate guidebook to access that deep knowing each of us holds within. At some point in time, we are all looking for answers. Soul Writing shows you that the answers are there just waiting for you to slow down, open your heart, and ask!

As one reviewer wrote…

The good news is that Joanne DiMaggio promises to show you a safe, reliable method of contacting your own personal source of wisdom, available on demand. The better news is that she delivers. Some things are easier done than said: Soul Writing shows you how it s done, and how you can do it.
